SOUND OF HISTORY

Goldsmiths Library Special Collections and Archives
There is a place in the library, which is accessible only for certain
library staff. Behind a locked door lies the hidden treasure of old
and rare books, periodicals, newspapers, maps, photographs and
tapes. This room tells the History of Goldsmiths and shows the
care, by which this archive is preserved. Being in here gives the
impression of past, the dust on boxes and papers proves it.
Given the fiction of books telling their story in silence, the Special
Collections and Archives reveal the sound of history.
SILENT SOUNDS II

Thousands of books tell thousands of stories. Silently.
Many books, as well as magazines and films, surround us all the time in the library. We can’t hear their story until we actually read or see them.
But just the way they present themselves to us – with different colours and sizes, standing straight or lying upside down, being squeezed in folders or drawer, and looking down to us from the top of a shelf – gives the impression of a sounding crowd. I can almost hear the deeper sounds of large and old books, and next to them the energized chatter in the novel section mixed with the entertaining talk of the mags next door.
